Outbreak of infantile enteritis caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli O6.H16.
Ten out of 18 babies at risk developed enteritis in an outbreak in a special-care baby unit. Salmonella, Shigella, and Escherichia coli belonging to the traditional infantile enteropathogenic serogroups were not found in faeces from the babies and the staff, and no virus particles were found by electron microscopy. Detailed serotyping of E. coli showed that five of the 10 babies with diarrhoea ...

EPIDEMIC infantile gastro-enteritis due to the specific serological types of Escherichia coli is the most infectious disease that is regularly admitted to hospitals in England, and there are at present no successful methods of preventing crossinfection by these organisms (Rogers, 1956). Jameson, Mann & Rothfield (1954) describe a large outbreak in which control was only achieved by complete clo...

An outbreak of acute diarrhoea occurred amongst babies in a special care baby unit. Thirteen babies were at risk; six suffered diarrhoea and three of these died. An Escherichia coli with an unidentifiable O antigen and flagellar antigen H23 was isolated from all six cases. This O antigen has been accepted into the international scheme as O158.

Mild gastro-intestinal upset is common in babies, but severe disease is not now the scourge it formerly was, and part of the great improvement in infantile mortality is due to its decline in the twentieth century. The reasons for this are not clear, and many theories have been advanced. Formerly, a considerable number of cases of gastro-enteritis were thought to be due to dietetic, that is to s...
